The Foss Waterway Seaport
The Foss Waterway Seaport building began as the Balfour Dock building, originally part of a mile-long wooden warehouse complex built in 1900. The building was originally a wheat transfer facility accommodating cargo ships in the early days of Tacoma’s History. The Warehouse closed in the 1970s and later was conceptualized as a community space for the Puget Sound Maritime community in the 1990s. The project later became known as the Working Waterfront Maritime Museum and later the Foss Waterway Seaport as it grew beyond a heritage museum.
